The hype of drinking alkaline ionized water is so high, that it is being praised by celebrities such as Beyoncé and Miranda Kerr. It’s claimed to have a multitude of health benefits, including weight loss, clear skin and even fighting cancer. Today, as bottled alkaline beverages move into the mainstream, more and more people are treading into these murky waters.

So What Exactly Is This ‘Alkaline Water’?

Alkaline water is less acidic than the regular tap water that you drink. When we say ‘less acidic’ it means it is rich in alkalizing compounds, including calcium, silica, potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate.

The word ‘alkaline’ refers to its pH level (the number that measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is). It is on the scale of 0-14, 0 being most acidic; 14 being the least acidic, or most basic; and 7 being neutral. And the pH level of alkaline water is closer to about 8-9.

Health Benefits Of Drinking Alkaline Water

It is a known fact that our body produces lot of acidic waste. Our body uses the food that we eat to produce energy, through metabolism. Everything that’s useful is used, and the waste becomes acid wastes and the cells dump them into our bloodstream. A human body cannot survive such a huge amount of acid in the body, so it tries to get rid of it through urination, excretion, respiration and perspiration. But unfortunately, our body cannot get rid of all the acids as quickly as we wish. So now the body tries to neutralize it by using the alkaline reserves stored in our body and the easiest way to do this is to ‘steal’ the calcium from our bones, this results in weakening our bones.

Drinking alkaline water is the quickest and the most efficient way to neutralize, or ‘alkalize’ our body. It not only neutralizes the acidity in our bloodstreams but also slows down bone loss. Drinking alkaline water has way too many health benefits and surprising results. It’s believed to reduce the risk of major health hazards such as blood pressure, diabetes and even cancer. Maybe this is the reason why our nutritionists and dietitians often suggest drinking alkaline water.
